
Independence Patriots
Football:Â
Trevor Bryan – The Patriots wide receiver had a 55 yard reception to the one yard line for a huge gain midway through the third period.
Omar Zazueta – The defensive standout busted through the Ravens offensive line to block an important field goal attempt.
Honorable Mention:Â This week Kalib Jennings 7 yard TD run, Brian Morgan a 9 yard TD reception, and Shai Wheeler with multiple pass receptions of 28,19 and 15 yards for key gains.
Soccer:Â
Cvan Than – The record breaking senior scored two goals including the overtime game winner against Glenn High School to propel the Patriots into the second round of the 2018 NCHSAA State Championship 4A Tournament.
Chase Davis – The senior co-captain played an excellent game offensively attacking and pushing the ball downfield for the Patriots. He earned the assist in the game winner with a nice feed pass to teammate Cvan Than.
Adam Ali – The Patriot goalkeeper had an outstanding game in the net giving up just one goal which he had no chance of stopping. However, he picked up 7 saves with shots on goal that kept his team in contention and eventually to achieve the overtime victory in the first round playoff game.
Rocky River Ravens
Football:Â
Korey Hailey – The former Patriot and now Raven had an solid night at quarterback for Rocky River. He connected on a 54 yard pass reception, he threw 27 and 16 yard touchdown receptions in the big win while showing some leadership qualities.
James Maye – The WR had multiple pass receptions including a 71 yard TD that was nullified to a 54 yard gain due to a penalty. He later would have a 16 yard TD reception.
Narique Smith – The senior defensive back, wide receiver and punter had a good all around game with a 27 yard pass reception and run for a TD. He made several key defensive plays and punted well with hang time giving the Ravens excellent field position. His longest punt was for 52 yards.
Gabriel Linen – Rushed for a 56 yard touchdown to give the Ravens a ten point advantage in the third quarter.
Brian Grier – The OLB intercepted a pass and returned it for a 27 yard TD to ice the game for the Ravens.
Jaylon Sharpe – The senior linebacker had another solid performance with 11 tackles in the game while being double teamed and the Patriots running to his opposite side all game long.
Queens Grant Stallions
Cross Country:Â
Lucas Brown – The senior has been at the top all season long of his classification. He recently finished first in the Midwest Regional with a time of 16:46.07. He helped the team finish third in the competition. Brown finished 4th in the NCHSAA State Cross Country Championships with a time of 16:43.18. The winning time was 16:28.16 as only 15 seconds separated the top four contenders.
Joshua Divers – The upcoming sophomore crossed the finish line in sixth place with an 18:13.18 time in the Midwest Regional. Divers finished 25th in the top quarter of all competitors with an improved time of 18:05.21 at the State Championships.
Soccer:Â
Mario Portillo – The teams leading scorer and offensive leader scored the winning goal in the 10th minute of the second half for the Stallions. He later added another goal his second of the game to make the score 2-0 in the teams first round 2018 NCHSAA Soccer Championship 1A Tournament.
