Patriots win road twinbill over East Mecklenburg

On Friday night the Independence basketball teams traveled to East Mecklenburg High School for a Southwestern 4A Conference game against the Eagles.

Women’s Game

Independence 37, East Mecklenburg 25

After Tuesday’s night loss to Hickory Ridge, the Lady Patriots bounced back to take a road win over the Lady Eagles 37-25 in a Southwestern 4A Conference game.  The Lady Patriots improved their record to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Indy’s sophomore Ayanna Anderson posted another double double scoring 12 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and getting 2 steals.  Freshman Braylyn Milton led the team in scoring with 14 points.  She also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.  Brianna McManus had 6 points and 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 1 assist.  Sharonda Smith added 3 points and had 2 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists.  Laura Flynn scored 2 points and had 5 rebounds.

After the Lady Patriots took an early first quarter lead, the Lady Eagles kept the game close until the third quarter.  The Lady Patriots outscored East Meck 11-2 in the third to take a 29-16 lead heading into the final period.  Both teams had scoring difficulties in the fourth quarter.  Indy could manage  only 8 points but held the Lady Eagles to 9 points to take the conference win 37-25.

Men’s Game

Independence 72, East Mecklenburg 52

In the nightcap the Patriots jumped out to an early 20-13 lead and took a 35-23 half time lead.  In the second half Indy applied its trapping defense and had a 57-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  The Patriots continued to increase their lead, and Coach Davis cleared his bench as his Patriots went on to a 72-52 conference win over the East Meck Eagles.

Jamarius Burton posted another double double scoring 18 points shooting 6-of-7 from the floor and hitting 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.  Burton finished the night with 3 steals, 1 blocked shot and 1 steal.  Junior Matthew Smith led the Patriots scoring with 19 points going 7-of-8 from the field and hitting 5-of-7 from the free throw line.  Smith had 5 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 1 steal.  Andra McKee was the third Indy player to post double figures.  McKee added 11 points had 1 rebound, 4 steals and 1 assist.  Jordan Mobley added 6 points, 2 steals and 2 assists.  Raja Milton and Amonti Burton had 4 points each.  Miles Pauldin, Lloyd Latta and Anthony Allen finished out the scoring with 2 points each.

Indy shot 49% from the floor hitting 27-of-55 shots and was 18-of-24 from the charity stripe for 67%.The Patriots stay perfect with a 5-0 overall record and are 2-0 in conference play.
