Tuesday’s second round of the Spring Break Baseball Tournament being played at Ardrey Kell High School had the state’s fifteenth ranked team the Marvin Ridge Mavericks from Waxhaw taking on the Independence Patriots.

The Mavericks’ lead off batter Michael Neal reached on an infield error.  However, the Mavericks’ next hitter Henry Jackson hit a grounder to second base which was fielded by Indy’s Ryan Mangum.  Mangum stepped on the base and threw to first baseman Corbin Berkovics for the double play.  Indy ended the top of the inning when Noah Howie picked off Marvin Ridge’s Andrew Kerry as he tried to steal second.

Indy got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning.  With two outs Matthew Mangum doubled to left center.  Noah Howie followed with another double to center scoring Mangum.  Indy stranded two runners as the inning came to a close with the Patriots leading 1-0.

In top of the third Marvin Ridge answered back by scoring three runs on three hits, one walk and one error.  Henry Jackson singled to left and stole second base.  Andrew Kerry hit a single to left field scoring Jackson to tie the game.  Kerry scored on a pickoff attempt at third when the third baseman could not handle the throw and the ball ended up in left field.  Bryce Bilodeau, who  had reached on an error, raced to third on the same play.  Bilodeau scored Marvin Ridge’s third run on a sacrifice fly to right field as the Mavericks took a 3-1 lead.

Indy added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  With two outs Nate Brown drew a walk, and Corbin Berkovics stepped to the plate and drove Brown in with a double to left field to make the score 3-2.

Marvin Ridge answered with three more runs in the top of the fifth.  Andrew Kerry led off with a grounder up the middle.  Bryce Bilodeau was up next and was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch.  Steven Gonzalez came to the plate and doubled scoring Kerry and Bilodeau.  Steven Ridge stepped in and hit a long sacrifice fly to left scoring Gonzalez and putting the Mavericks up 6-2.

The Mavericks added their final run in the top of the sixth.  Henry Jackson drew a walk and stole second.  With Jackson on second, Andrew Kerry hit a single to right field scoring Jackson to make the score 7-2.

Neither team scored in the seventh and final inning, and Marvin Ridge took the victory over the Patriots.
