The Mint Hill Army Junior American Legion baseball team made up of area high school players ages 14-17 (freshman to juniors) won their home opener recently 5-4 at Independence High School Stadium.
The team lead by QGHS Coach Dan Kerr has some good talent and won the home opener in dramatic fashion. The team took a 4-1 deficit into the bottom of the 7th inning and came away with an exciting 5-4 victory over Kings Mountain.
Kohl McConeghy from Covenant Day with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning would work a walk, Drew Roberts from Butler High doubled into the right center field gap to put runners on second and third still with only one out. Then a pair of consecutive walks made the score 4-2. The Kings Mountain coach made a pitching change bringing in their stopper to face Queens Grant’s John Orlowski. He hit a slow tapper that scored the runner from third and Orlowski was out at first. The visitors then intentionally walked the next batter Jabe Wilhoit to load the bases with two outs causing a force at any base to face Price Hargett from Porter Ridge. On the second pitch of the at bat, a wild pitch scored Killian Wright from Butler to tie the game at 4-4. Hargett then worked the at bat for a walk to reload the bases to keep the comeback alive.
Now with the game on the line Queens Grant High’s Andy Duran stepped up to the plate, strike one on a fastball on the outside black corner of home plate. Then on the second pitch with the Kings Mountain reliever still working the outside corner Duran adjusted nicely and stroked a single to right field scoring Alex Novak on third base from Butler High for the walk-off home opener victory. Porter Ridge pitcher Price Hargett took the win on the mound for Mint Hill.
