Lady Patriots defeat Porter Ridge 9-3

The Lady Patriots defeated the Pirates from Porter Ridge in an away conference game to extend their unbeaten streak in conference competition.  Independence is 10-3 overall, and 9-0 in the Southwestern 4A Conference.

Porter Ridge took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning.  However, the Patriots who are a good hitting team scored 3 runs in the fourth, 2 runs in the fifth, and added 4 more insurance runs in the sixth inning to put this game away for another conference win.



The big hits came from sophomore Maya Douglas who had a double and hit a home run for another multi-hit game.  She also picked up 3 RBI’s for the Patriots in the win.  Mallory Shaver the power hitting first basemen contributed a double and 2 RBI’s.  While senior leader Kayla Douglas went 3-3 with 2 RBI’s making a significant offensive contribution.

Douglas, the Patriots top hurler pitched 7 complete innings for the victors.  She spread out 8 hits, 3 base on balls, had 5 strikeouts, tossed 105 pitches while allowing 3 earned runs.  She had a rough start in the first inning giving up two runs, however, settled down and took control of the game allowing the Pirates only one earned run in the remaining six innings of competition.

Junior Jaylin Adkins went 2-2, and sophomore Cameron Howie 1-3 to account for all the hitting in the softball game for Independence.

The Lady Patriots have a key Southwestern 4A Conference rivalry game coming up next Tuesday at home against the Butler Bulldogs.  Independence defeated the Bulldogs 7-2 in their first contest.  The game is schedule to begin at 5:30 pm.
