Independence wins games at East Mecklenburg

On Tuesday night the Independence Patriots varsity basketball teams traveled to East Mecklenburg for a Southwestern 4A Conference basketball game.

Women’s Game



Independence 43, East Mecklenburg 33

East Mecklenburg’s Lady Eagles started the game with a quick layup only to have Indy’s Azuria Barrino to tie the score at 2.  Indy’s Laura Flynn nailed a jumper to give the Lady Patriots a 4-2 lead.

After making a free throw and scoring on an Indy turnover, the Lady Eagles re-took the lead 5-4.  This was the last time the Lady Eagles would hold the lead.

With 2:08 showing on the clock, Alex Barrino went to the foul line to tie the score at 5.  Then with 1:54 remaining, she got the ball in the paint and fought her way to the basket to give Indy a 7-5 lead.

After another basket by Alex Barrino and a Braylyn Milton 3-pointer, the Lady Patriots led 12-5 with a minute to play in the quarter.

Laura Flynn finished the period with a rebound and a score to make the score 14-5 as the quarter came to an end.

In the second quarter, the Lady Patriots scored only eight points while allowing nine Lady Eagles points as the Lady Patriots held a 22-14 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Lady Patriots scored 22 points while the Lady Eagles scored 19 second-half points as the Lady Patriots took the 43-33 conference win.

The Lady Patriots are now 3-0 in conference play and 8-1 overall.

Men’s Game

Independence 75, East Mecklenburg 49

Indy’s men’s basketball team put up big numbers en-route to a blow out win 75-49 over the East Mecklenburg Eagles in a Southwestern 4A Conference game played Tuesday night at East Mecklenburg High School.

Indy’s Nygell Verdier led five in double figures with 18 points.  He also had 1 rebound and dished out 6 assists.  Omarion Bodrick added 15 points, pulled down 5 rebounds, and had 2 steals with 3 blocked shots.  Anthony Allen added 12 points and had 1 rebound.  He had 5 assists and 2 steals. Jalen Hinton scored 12 points.  He had 2 assists and 4 steals. Landon King added 11 points for the Patriots.  Divine Allah had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.  De’Drick Givens scored 2 and had 3 rebounds.  He was credited with 1 assist and 3 steals.  Zaire May added 2 points.  He also had 1 rebound and 2 steals.

Indy led 39-18 at the end of the first half including outscoring East Meck by 13 points in the first quarter.

With the win, Indy improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the Southwestern 4A Conference.
