Independence Patriots sweep at home over West Mecklenburg

The Independence Patriots hosted West Mecklenburg on Tuesday night for a non-conference varsity doubleheader.

West Meck 39, Independence 58

On Tuesday night at game’s end the Lady Patriots had three players in double figures as Indy took a 19-point victory, 58-39 over the West Mecklenburg Lady Hawks in a non-conference basketball game.

The Lady Patriots jumped out to a 17-2 first quarter lead and never looked back.  Brianna McManus led the Lady Patriots with six first period points. Sharonda Smith added five points.  Braylyn Milton hit a 3-point basket while Laura Flynn added two points.

Indy started the second quarter with Braylyn Milton sinking a 3-point basket to increase the lead to 20-2.  Laura Flynn did a good job on both the defensive and offensive boards and put in four second quarter points.  Sharonda Smith and Brianna McManus added two points each as the Lady Patriots took an 27-8 half time lead.

At the start of the third period, Braylyn Milton was fouled going to the basket.  She connected on one of her two shots moving Indy out to a 20-point lead at 28-8.  West Meck hit a 3-point shot with 6:15 remaining in the period cutting Indy’s lead to 15 points at 30-15.  On the Lady Patriots’ next possession Milton drove to the basket to make the score 32-15 with 5:45 left in the third.  After a Kalyn Perry’s basket, Milton stole the inbounds pass  and drove to the basket putting the Lady Patriots up by 21 points at 39-18 with 1:39 remaining in the third period. The Lady Patriots finished the quarter leading 41-22.

In the final period the Lady Hawks went on a little run cutting the score to 13 points 42-29 with 5:40 to go.  However, the Lady Patriots came fighting back on a basket by Alexandria Barrino and a couple of made foul shots by McManus to made the score 46-29 with 4:40 left in the game.  Indy moved back to a 19-point lead on a made foul shot by Ayanna Anderson and by Sharonda Smith hitting two more foul shots with 3:30 to go in the game.  With 3:10 to go Anderson grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled.  She made one of her two shots making the score 50-30.  Braylyn Milton drained a 3-pointer with 2:15 remaining putting the Lady Patriots up 53-32.  Indy went on to win the game by a score of 58-39.

Braylyn Milton led the Lady Patriots with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.  Sharonda Smith added 12 points, had 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.  Brianna McManus posted 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal.  Laura Flynn scored 7 points and grabbed 3 offensive and 7 defensive rebounds.  Ayanna Anderson scored 4 points. Alexandria Barrino and Kalyn Perry had 2 points each.

Men’s Game

West Meck 35, Independence 71

The Independence men’s basketball team entered Tuesday’s home game against West Mecklenburg looking for its third straight victory.

The Patriots got big nights from four different players and improved their record to 3-0 with a 71-35 blow out win over the Hawks in a non-conference basketball game.

Senior Jamarius Burton led Indy with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from the foul line.  He also posted another double double by grabbing 11 rebounds.

Senior Jordan Mobley added 12 points on 3-of-9 from the field and 3-of-9 at the three point arc and a perfect 3-for-3 at the free throw line.

Junior Matthew Smith had 11 points shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, including 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

Junior Andra McKee made it four Indy players to post double figures with 11 points hitting 3-of-3 from the floor,  including 1-of-1 from behind the three point line and going 4-of-4 from the charity stripe to shoot 100% for the night.

Other players scoring for the Patriots were Raja Milton 7, J. Stewart-Twine 5, Miles Pauldin 3, Anthony Allen 3, Lloyd Latta 2, and Travis Burgess 2.
