The official start of spring lacrosse is mid-February, but players from the Men’s & Women’s varsity lacrosse team at Independence HS have been working hard since fall to raise funds for their club program. “Every player is asked to reach out into the community and partner with businesses that have a desire to sponsor local athletes,” states volunteer coordinator, Sandy Barnett, “It’s a win-win for businesses who can play a major role in helping us create opportunities for students to build life skills through team sports. In return, we promote our sponsors through print, social media, referrals and urge families to do business with our local partners.”
This year the program exceeded their $10,000 goal, which is a great help in the offset of required expenses associated with a sport that is not funded by the district. Many sponsors return every year, making an even greater impact by consistently pledging their support; Robinson Orthodontics, Dunwellz, Showmars, Evans Honda, Publix, Todd Younker State Farm, Armstrong Relocation, B & C Casting, Royal Carribean and International Education Evaluations.
New players to the program did a great job of bringing in new partners that allow Independence Lacrosse to offer the most affordable program in their conference. New sponsors include; WM Plastics, Bill Brawley, Compleat Rehab & Sports Therapy, Maid Pro, P & T Siding, Snap Fitness, Kleinheinz Dentistry, Bella Vita Salon, Land Rover Charlotte, Carolina Cleaners, Idlewild Family Dentistry, Premier Martial Arts, 90 Degree Salon, Shelly Lands CPA and many family members that have pledged support.
With a roster of 37 girls, returning Coach Melissa LaDez Moore, feels confident that she is on her way to growing the game of lacrosse and the program at Independence. “I feel certain that I will be able to field a JV team soon, so my players can get the game experience they need and be ready to compete on the varsity level.” Coach Andrew Bernstein, of NY, will be the new head coach of the men’s team hoping to build the numbers and success on the field. Both coaches played division lacrosse in college, and offer a wealth of knowledge and experience about lacrosse and recruiting.
The first home game on the schedule is a challenging one, February 27th against Charlotte Catholic. Indy invites the community to come cheer the Patriots at 5 & 7 pm in the stadium, and help us to thank and support the businesses that helped make this season possible.
