Damond Tillman stands at 6’3” and has been involved in the basketball program at Independence since his freshman year. His teammates call him DJ, and this nickname has stuck with him throughout high school. Damond is quick, agile, and takes advantage of his abilities and skills to make a positive contribution to his team’s success.
He takes full advantage of the study hall after school and prior to practice as he carries a full academic schedule. He uses technology on his iphone reminder and note pad to maximize the use of his time. Damond mentioned having these tools helps him better plan and organize his busy schedule during the basketball season in particular.
Damond enjoys his early morning workouts with a cousin in-law who played professional basketball in the European League whenever he is free. It really makes a difference with his knowledge and experience playing at that level. “He can teach me some of the finer points of the game, “ said Damond. He also played AAU basketball in the Summer League with the Carolina Attack and Carolina Predators.
What motivates Damond is his family, mentors and himself as an individual and in athletics. Basketball provides good work habits to tackle a career and to prepare me for life, said Damond. I’m always trying to better myself as a person and improve my athletic skills.
After graduation I would like to prepare for a career as an athletic trainer especially at the college level or professional level. I want to study anatomy and kinesiology. Potential college choices are Queens College or East Carolina University. If he can obtain an opportunity to play basketball at the college level, it would probably impact his decision. However, academics is where I need to focus for the long term, said Damon.
Up Close and Personal with Damond:
• Most influential person in my life is my grandfather. He calls me every day to stay focused and reminds me of what is important. He helps me keep things in perspective.
• Favorite college team is the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program.
• Favorite professional team are the Los Angeles Lakers and especially D’Angelo Russell.
• Other than basketball his favorite sport is football.
• Best movie that I always enjoy is “The Grinch.”
• Most enjoyable music is hip-hop.
• Academic subjects he enjoys most are math and science.
• Pregame ritual is to listen to music, J.Cole in particular. Also, I must perform my stretching exercises prior to every game.
• My advice to younger teammates is, if you want it bad enough you have to work hard for it. Also, don’t let situations get you down, don’t waste time to worry about things you cannot control. Finally, learn from your mistakes; this is a good lesson in life.
