Richard Taylor 87, of Mint Hill, passed away of a broken heart on Friday, November 4, 2016, at the Hospice of Union County in Monroe, NC. Dick was married to the love of his life, Bernie, for almost 70 years and could not bear to be without her after she passed away on August 7, 2016.
Dick was born in Mercersburg, PA, on December 26, 1928, the son of Thelma & Omar Taylor. Soon after graduating from high school, he married Bernadine Loretta Bailey on January 4, 1947. They were introduced by a friend at their favorite swimming pool when Dick was only 14 & Bernie was 17. It was love at first sight.
After his high school graduation, he worked as a control room operator at Medusa Cement Company for many years. After retiring from Medusa, he stayed busy at his new position as a maintenance worker at York College near their home.
He was loved by the faculty & staff until he retired. In 2000, Dick and Bernie moved to Tega Cay, SC and then in 2009 moved to Charlotte, NC, both times to be near family. Dick & Bernie were loved members of Idlewild Baptist Church in Matthews, NC.
He is survived by his son, Greg (wife Cindy) Taylor of Southport, NC; and grandchildren: Britton (wife Michelle) of Warren, OH, Nick (fiancé Meg) of Berne, NY, Christian of Charlotte, NC, Sarah (husband Philippe) of Albany, NY, and Craig (wife Erin) of Ballston Spa, NY. Also survived by his sister, Elaine (husband Bill) of Chambersburg, PA & sister-in-law, LouAnn Taylor of Crystal Springs, MS.
He is further survived by five great grandchildren and numerous friends. Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernadine, three month old son, Jeffrey Lynn, two brothers (WIlliam and Jack) and two sisters (Rose & Joanne).
There will be no calling hours. The family invited friends to a Graveside Service honoring the life of Richard Taylor. This was held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 11:00 am at his final place of earthly rest at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.
