Quilting fabrics to make garments or covers can be traced back to the 12th century. The craft was brought over with the early settlers and became a normal part of life of life in America. Girls were taught at an early age to sew their own clothes and put together quilts. Fabric was stretched on large frames and suspended from the ceiling in homes and schools. When not in use, frames were raised to the ceiling.

Quilting frames and racks are suspended on the ceiling of the Ashcraft Schoolhouse where local residents demonstrate their stitching skills.

Free tours of the village are offered on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. throughout September.
