David Luther McGee, President of Mint Hill Arts, will lead a hands-on workshop on sculpture titled, “Exploring the 3rd Dimension: To Infinity and Beyond.” The workshop will be held on Tuesday, June 26 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the gallery at 11205 Lawyers Road in Mint Hill.

A North Carolina native, McGee majored in Sculpture and Painting at East Carolina University. He received his teaching degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His sculpture is a mix of abstract and realism using found and recycled materials.  Sandy Calder, Edgar Degas and David Smith are some of his favorite artists. In painting, he is primarily a landscape artist who focuses on the ever changing landscapes and in some cases the people of the southeastern United States.

McGee recently retired as an Elementary Art Teacher. He taught 26 years in the classroom and also conducted teacher workshops and gave demonstrations of his techniques.  Even in retirement he believes that “the teacher’s task is never over as the teacher watches for the teachable moment when students’ eyes open and their minds start to ask.”  The workshop at Mint Hill Arts is one of those potential teachable moments, so mark your calendars to have your eyes opened! The workshop is free and open to the entire community.  Mint Hill Arts will provide supplies, but participants may want to bring some of the following: hot glue guns, any type of paper (tissue paper or other), scissors, small recycled water bottles, and any clean recycled stuff that you have on hand!
