Welcome Home!

The Moving Wall will arrive on Thursday, October 10.  A procession will travel down Highway 51 from Matthews and arrive in downtown Mint Hill between 8:20-8:30 a.m. before making its way to the park.  We encourage everyone to take time from their morning and go outside and ‘Welcome Home’ those who gave it all.

Welcome home.

Those words have a weight to them for anyone living in the Vietnam Era, especially the brave souls who served in our military during that time.

Many of them returned and were not welcomed home or even thanked for their service. Thankfully, that era is over, and most Americans have learned from those mistakes and make an effort to treat our service men and women like the heroes they are.

Because of the way so many of our Vietnam Veterans were treated, many of them didn’t feel they had a safe space to speak about their experiences or gain closure by reconnecting with their battle buddies and saying good-bye to the ones they lost in combat.

That’s why the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. has been so profoundly touching to most Veterans and family members. It’s an opportunity for them to acknowledge the pain and the loss and express their final good-byes. It is a solemn place, but it is a healing one too.

Many Vietnam Veterans cannot make it to Washington D.C. though, and neither can many of their families. So for the last 35 years, a smaller replica, The Moving Wall, has been traveling the country for Veterans, family members and American citizens to visit and take in.

The profound emotions so many experiences at the Vietnam Wall are also experienced at The Moving Wall as well. And now The Moving Wall has come to Mint Hill from Oct. 10 to 14 the surrounding community will be able to visit 24 hours a day.

There will be three ceremonies while The Moving Wall is here; all ceremonies will take place at the exhibit and are expected to be about 20 to 25 minutes long. They will include the posting of the colors, an invocation and a Veteran speaker. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
