Learning from Nick Goldschmidt

There are always certain wines that really have an impact.  One such grouping are wines by Goldschmidt Vineyards. Vintner’s Hill has developed a significant group of regular customers who enjoy wines by Goldschmidt Vineyards, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon called “Hillary”.

Lucky for us, Nick Goldschmidt, the revered winemaker stopped by recently on his east coast tour along with the local wine rep. Meeting Nick Goldschmidt, namesake and winemaker for Goldschmidt Vineyards really gives you a perspective of why his wines are so good and so enjoyable to drink.  It’s his love of what he does, his passion for winemaking and his incredible intellect of all things wines, from soil, to barrel types and everything in between.

Self-described as “an inventor who drives a tractor”, Nick walked us through the highlights of his Goldschmidt Wines. We learned so many interesting things such as how he chooses his vineyards both in the United States and abroad.  He spoke with us about the difference between irrigated grapes vs. non-irrigated grapes, both have their merits. He also discussed how he selects the barrels he uses down to why it’s important to know the region the trees grow and even which part of the tree is most desirable! As well as the difference between American oak and French oak.

We wrapped up discussing attributes of Alexander vs. Napa Valley in California.  Where are your favorite California wines from? Our group was split. This is an experience we will continue to remember and feel proud that Vintner’s Hill was a place Nick chose to visit while in North Carolina for a day. If you want to learn more about Goldschmidt Wines and our visit with Nick Goldschmidt feel free to stop by and ask. See you soon and Cheers!
