MINT HILL, NC – On Wednesday, July 1, 2020, Girl Scout Troop 1782 of Mint Hill showed their appreciation to local postal workers at the Mint Hill Post Office, the Yorkmont Post Office, and the West Pointe Postal Distribution Center.  July 1 is National Postal Worker Day and was established in 1997 to honor the brave men and women who face rain, sleet, blizzards, and more to bring our mail to us.  Troop 1782 is led by Melissa Congdon and Elizabeth Locke, and they showed their appreciation in the most Girl Scout way possible – with cookies, of course!

“Many of our loyal cookie customers are Postal Workers.  Our troops realized that while many essential workers like healthcare workers and Policemen were being widely recognized during the pandemic (as they should), Postal Workers were not.  We didn’t see any meals or gifts of appreciation being delivered to Postal Workers as we saw were being delivered to other groups of essential workers.  So, we decided that we wanted to do something ‘sweet’ for them to show our appreciation,” explains Patty Hill-Miller, a Parent Volunteer with Troop 1782.  “Everyone has a favorite cookie – all of them!  Many of the Postal Workers were excited to see the Thin Mints, Trefoils, and Samoas. They were so happy and surprised to receive the cookies.  It really made their day!”

“Cookie sales were great [this year]!” continues Hill-Miller.  “Our troop sold approximately 11,000 boxes of cookies. One girl in our troop, Madison Miller, sold 7,022 boxes this year.  She has been the top-seller and record-breaker for the Girl Scouts Hornets Nest Council for the past two years.”

In case this story made you realize that you didn’t get your cookies yet this year, Troop 1782 is still selling cookies!  “The last cookie booth was canceled due to the onset of COVID-19, so we still have some cookies,” says Hill-Miller. “Potential cookie monsters (customers) can contact our Cookie Mom to purchase cookies.  Potential Sponsors can also purchase cookies to donate to a group or organization. Please send an email to pattyhill2302@yahoo.com if you are interested.  Contact-less payments can be made via Cash App or Venmo and social distancing measures are in place for all deliveries.”
