Updated 9/28: Due to forecasted weather conditions related to Hurricane Ian, Tina Ross Afternoon in the Park is cancelled and rescheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2023.

Music & Brews Night

The fun kicks off at 6:30 pm on September 10 with the Town’s second Music and Brews Night sponsored by Edifice Construction and Mint Hill Wil Sate Farm.  Enjoy beer from Middle James Brewing, Eleven Lakes Brewing, Triple C Brewing and Town Brewing while listening to High Fidelity play rock, funk and motown hits from the 70s and 80s.

The Town’s first Music and Brews night in in May suffered from a lack of “brews” when beer vendor Olde Mecklenburg Brewery was unable to meet the demand of the crowd.  “We learned a lot from the first event,” says Mint Hill Events Assistant Cassie Brooks, “and we made some changed so this event will be successful.”

In addition to more breweries, local taproom Pour 64 will be on site helping facilitate distribution by checking IDs and distributing wristbands.  “All patrons will be required to provide proof of identification prior to being served,” says Brooks.  “No identification, no wristband.  No wristband, no beer.”

Music and Brews will also showcase a variety of food vendors, including Chilaka Taco, 100 Main Beef & BBQ, A Little Taste of Chicago, and Sprinkles.  The even is open to patrons of all ages, but it’s geared toward adults, so you’ll see Bocce Ball, Giant Jenga, Connect 4 and Cornhole in place of the kid-centric games and bounce houses familiar from Family Fun Nights.

Music and Brews is free and open to the public.  No outside alcohol is allowed.

Family Fun Night

The last Family Fun Night of the summer will take pace on September 17 at Veterans Park.  Family Fun kicks off at 6:30 pm in the Kid Zone, sponsored by Mint Hill Orthodontics, and word is the fire truck will make one last appearance to cool down the crowd.

Jay Hoff & Co take the stage at 7:00 pm.  A Charlotte music scene staple, Jay Hoff breathes new life into your favorite 21st century pop hits and rock anthems.  A mix of nostalgia and top 40, it’s an act not to be missed!

Food will be available for purchase from a variety of food trucks, including Thrasher Dawgs, Mama K’s Kettle Corn, Sammy’s Snowballs, I Scream for Ice Cream, and Chilaka Taco.

Scarecrow Decorating Contest

Mint Hill’s Annual Scarecrow Decorating Contest kicks off on October 1!  Begun during COVID as a way to encourage some socially distanced fun, the Town has continued the popular contest going on three years now.  “Who doesn’t like driving around looking at scarecrows?” says Brooks.  “It’s similar to looking at Christmas decorations – a family friendly activity that everyone can enjoy.”

The contest is open to any individual, business, organization or non-profit within the Mint Hill Town limits who would like to contribute to the spirit of the season.  The Town saw 59 scarecrows dot its streets in 2020 and 72 last year in 2021.  This year, they hope to top 85 scarecrows!

This year’s contest will work much the same as the past two years.  Those interested in participating will need to register (and pay a $10.00 fee) by September 22. Participants should create their scarecrow and display it outside their business, church, home or club by October 1.  The Town of Mint Hill will provide a list of scarecrow locations; scarecrows will also be featured online.

Voting will take place online from October 14 – 21.  The winners will be announced at Mint Hill Madness on October 22, but scarecrows will remain on display through Halloween.  First, second and third place winners in both “business” and “individual” categories will win generous cash prizes courtesy of Novant Health.

Tina Ross Afternoon in the Park

A tribute to the memory of late Commissioner Tina Ross, Afternoon in the Park will feature work from local artists, artisans and crafters in front of Town Hall.

The third event of its name dedicated to Ross, this will actually be the fifteenth official “Afternoon in the Park.”  Originally termed “Sunday Afternoon in the Park” – a reference to Georges Seurat’s most famous work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, and not the event’s location – the annual festival was held for over a decade on a Sunday afternoon in August at Wilgrove Park.

This year’s Afternoon in the Park will bring more than 30 vendors to Town Hall.  If you’re hoping to shop for handmade goods this fall, this is the event to be at.  “All vendors at the Tina Ross Afternoon in the Park are required to make their products,” explains Brooks, differentiating the event from what you can expect to see at Mint Hill Madness, which has also traditionally welcomed vendors.  “Nothing commercially manufactured is allowed at Afternoon in the Park. Mint Hill Madness will have a few arts/craft vendors, independent home businesses and local businesses, plus our sponsors.”

In addition to vendors, Afternoon in the Park will also feature food vendors and entertainment like the Independence Jazz Band, Sophie Miller, and Mint Hill Dance.

Oktoberfest 2021

Note that dogs – excluding service animals – are not allowed at any of Town of Mint Hill’s events.  “We love your four-legged friends,” assures Brooks, “but we kindly ask that you leave them safely at home during events.  Service animals are always welcome.”
