Shop Local This Holiday Season!

MINT HILL, NC – “Shop Local” has become a common refrain during the holidays.  But what does it mean to shop local, and why is it so important?

The ongoing pandemic has made it a difficult two years for small businesses.  “If you are a small business and made it though the closures of the pandemic, it is especially important to have consumers support your business this year,” says Pour 64 Owner Sarah Brock.  “Some small businesses got some help, and some did not. Those who didn’t made it through by the skin of their teeth. If we can all help small  businesses by shopping local, the businesses you love to go to will stay open.”

Shopping local means you’re supporting more than just a small business owner; you’re also supporting all the people they employ.  “Local businesses are the highest employers on a national scale,” says Timothy Burgess, owner of Your Local Game Store.  “As a local store, my employees are hired from Mint Hill.”

Moreover, the money you invest in a local, small business gets invested back into the community in different ways.  “Local businesses are the ones sponsoring local schools, sports and entertainment events,” says Commissioner Patrick Holton, who owns Woof ‘n Hoof.  “We participate and invest in local programs and fundraisers,” adds Burgess.  “Our money stays in the community as we support other local businesses and pay our taxes.”

“Small businesses give back so much to their community,” says Mint Hill Flower Market Owner Kat dePrater.  “Business owners often volunteer both time and finances for much of the community’s events, teams and fundraisers.  Without small businesses, many of the raffle prizes you see at events, booths and sponsorships at festivals like Mint Hill Madness, parade floats in the Christmas Parade, and little league sponsorships wouldn’t be possible.  Most of those are done by small businesses.  When you support local, you’re truly making our community stronger, and that is ultimately a win-win for all.”

But above all, shopping local means supporting the hopes, dreams, and livelihood of real people right here in your own community.  “You never know; the person you may be purchasing from may even live in your neighborhood,” says Sara Fabian, Special Event Coordinator for Urban Air Adventure Park.  “We need to pull together and support one another.”

“When you shop local, you’re supporting more than a business,” says dePrater.  “You’re supporting your neighbors, yours children’s classmates, your friends, your family,  your fellow church members, your fellow PTA volunteers.  Without the support of residents, small businesses wouldn’t be able to survive as a brick and mortar locations.”

“This holiday season more than any other, it’s so important to support these businesses and all our local retailers,” says 1st Choice Properties Owner Anna Granger.  “As a real estate agent, I know that using an experienced local agent will help all buyers and sellers get the best and most useful advice regarding buying and selling in the community of their choice.  Local retailers provide that same type of personalized experience that you just won’t get in a big box store.”

“When people come in and ask about our services, I say, ‘Do you know why I take such care in the service we provide?’ says Michael Lowe, owner of Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home.  “It’s because today you’re in my small business, and tomorrow I’ll be in yours.  I’m proud to live here and have worked in this community for nine years, and I know that the care you give is the care you get.”

“I personally think we will see the effects of the global pandemic for a few years,” says dePrater.  “We are going to experience hiring demands, increases on cost of goods, shipping delays, etc – but we will work through it.  What I know is that supporting local through the ups and downs is critical,” she continues.  “Target and Walmart will survive.  Their CEO’s will still be paid a salary.  If we didn’t have the support of this community, we wouldn’t survive.  This store is my only livelihood,  Yes, it’s all very scary to really process, but I love this community so much, its worth the risk.  I love that we get to serve our community in this way.  It’s my dream.”

Support the dreams of all our local businesses by shopping local this holiday season!
