MINT HILL, NC – The Queen’s Grant Stallions’ Abi Sawyers had an outstanding opening day on the softball diamond for the conference title contenders led by head coach Don Nicholas. She is expected to have a very solid season for this Stallions team, along with being a leader and their best all-around player.
In the opener, the young sophomore almost completed the cycle; she went 4/4 with a walk, double, triple, smacking two home runs and accumulating 10 RBIs. She pitched 4.1 innings allowing no runs, no hits, or walks while striking out 12 batters. Her performance is almost Babe Ruth-like when looking at how she dominated this game.
As a freshman last season, Sawyers was a 1st Team All-Conference selection, and if she continues playing at half this pace for the remainder of the season, she will be an obvious choice once again.
Last season Sawyers’ batting average was .625, and she scored 21 runs, had 25 hits, 23 RBI’s, 7 doubles, 2, HR’s, with a .700 OBP, .950 SLG, 1.650 OPS. These were absolutely great stats for the young freshman standout.
The team Captain of this year’s Stallions softball squad certainly deserves this recognition with a tremendous opening day effort. The sports writers at the Mint Hill Times want to congratulate Abi Sawyers for being selected this season’s spring sports first “Player of the Week.”
