MINT HILL, NC – On the evening of July 11 at the Matthews Town Hall, the Nancy Glenn Community Servant Award was presented to a gentleman with a heart of gold and the kindness that makes your heart smile, Nate Huggins.

The award is presented in honor of the late Nancy Glenn. She was a woman from Matthews, NC, that represented what is great about the town. Glenn led the Matthews Chambers of Commerce, and she owned the Matthews News and Record. The dedication that she had to the community and giving through selfless acts for those in need was outstanding. The award each year is presented to someone in the community to honor Glenn’s legacy. Each nominee is a person in the community that displays a commitment to the Matthews area and the surrounding communities’ nonprofits. The 2021-22 Nancy Glenn Community Servant Award was proudly presented to Nate to honor his work with special needs adults, disabled veterans, and seniors through Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care.

Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care is a non-profit that is making a difference in the community. The program was established by Nate and Vivian Huggins in 1998. Currently, they are serving Mint Hill, Eastern Charlotte, and Union County. The program offers many services such as Skilled Nursing Care & Health Education and Rehabilitation Services. Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care helps its  participants gain access to family support groups, Licensed Physical, Occupational, and Respiratory Therapists, and Medical Social Workers. Participants in the program also have health service maintenance and monitoring available to them along with transportation to and from the center.

The design of the program is not only to meet the physical needs of individuals but also to ensure that individuals with special needs can have the support of the community for resources that they need. It also provides socialization, peer support, and nursing services all in a stimulating environment that promotes improvement in mental and physical health. Personal care, nutritional, recreational, social, educational, computer and gospel programs are provided on site daily. The program is made up of individuals within the community that have the same heart of service, a heart of compassion, and want to help address the needs of people in the community who may be economically or otherwise challenged. Blessed Assurance Adult Day Care is blessed to have a group of individuals who want to ensure the outreach to the community goes above and beyond; that is exactly what they are doing each day. “We have been blessed to be a blessing – we must help those least able to help themselves!” says Huggins.
