Canned goods, frozen turkeys needed to reach goal
Calling all turkeys! Local nonprofit Common Heart is seeking donations to provide 1,100 frozen turkeys with all the fixin’s to 1,100 local families in need so they can prepare their own Thanksgiving feasts. It’s the 13th annual Great Turkey Countdown!
Residents can drop off frozen turkeys and other related nonperishables like canned fruits and vegetables, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, macaroni & cheese etc. at the nonprofit’s office, 116 Business Park Drive, Suite A in Indian Trail, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday to Friday & 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday. Nonperishables should be dropped off by Saturday, Nov. 9.
Cash donations are also being accepted. Every $30 raised buys a turkey and the fixin’s. To donate online, visit http://Turkeys.CommonHeart.org or mail a check (payable to Common Heart) to: PO Box 2761, Indian Trail, NC 28079. Write “Turkeys” in the memo line.
More than 450 volunteers will be needed at the Common Cupboard food pantry, on Saturday, Nov. 23 to load vehicles and deliver the 1,100 Thanksgiving dinner baskets. Volunteers can sign up online at http://Turkeys.CommonHeart.org.
The baskets will benefit families throughout Union County, Matthews and Mint Hill.
This all-hands-on-deck volunteer event is the Cupboard’s biggest delivery day and continues to grow, Executive Director Keith Adams said.
“When we started this Thanksgiving program 12 years ago, we gave away just over 100 Thanksgiving baskets. The effort – thanks to the community’s generosity – has grown steadily since then and this year we hope we can serve 1,100 families,” he said. The first Great Turkey Countdown started on Facebook in 2007. Today, the tradition continues at Facebook.com/TheCommonHeart.
About Common Heart
Founded in 2006, Common Heart works to create a “small revolution of kindness” in our community to eradicate food insecurity and eliminate generational poverty. Common Heart’s programs are designed to engage community volunteer action in 3 areas: food pantries, thrift stores, and economic empowerment.
The 501(c)3 nonprofit serves families and individuals in need who live in Union County and the surrounding area through three weekly food pantries and four mobile food pantries currently serving over 2,000 individuals each month. Common Things Boutique & Thrift Shop, 321 Indian Trail Road North, sells new and gently-used items at bargain prices and is open to the public with proceeds from the shop helping to feed hungry families. Our Economic Empowerment programs provide focus groups to help those in poverty move into stability as well as community workshops to better understand local poverty.
Donations and volunteers are always welcome and appreciated. Find more information about Common Heart online at www.CommonHeart.org .
