MINT HILL, NC – The Kumon Math and Reading Center in Mint Hill offers one-on-one tutoring for students who can benefit from additional help outside of their school’s classrooms. The program offers tutoring for students as young as three years of age through twelfth grade. The early learner’s program focuses on fundamental development such as letter sounds, patterns with numbers, and handwriting.
Teachers form a customized lesson plan for each student’s academic needs. This concentrated technique prevents gaps in the learning process for those students who grasp ideas more easily with individualized support. In this way, students progress at their own pace rather than the broad pace of a classroom. This allows students to take more pride and ownership in their learning with a higher sense of accomplishment measurable by assessment scores and lessened anxiety on test day. By identifying and understanding their own mistakes, students are more able to master concepts.
Originating in Japan over 60 years ago, Kumon is now the largest after-school math and reading program in the world. Specializing in helping remedial students, Kumon’s goal is to return to the student’s understanding of a subject on a foundational level. Making sure there are no holes in the student’s comprehension, Kumon allows students to learn by doing as opposed to learning by watching the teacher work through the problem. By studying examples, students are able to work through the problems from a different angle of concentration that lends itself to a level of comprehension which might not otherwise be accessible. By providing extra support, Kumon allows students to approach learning with more confidence than they may be used to.
There are many centers in Charlotte. The Mint Hill location opened in April 2016 and is located at:
7114 Brighton Park Drive
Mint Hill, NC 28227
Students normally meet between 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. However, due to the pandemic, online instruction is currently provided via Zoom. When students are on-site, Kumon follows social distancing guidelines, only allowing up to eight students per classroom. Everyone is required to wear masks/facial coverings, and temperatures are taken upon entry. Hands are sanitized upon entry and exit.
Currently, the first block starts at 1:00 pm. Each block, or session, is approximately an hour long. Kumon provides an engaged and upbeat type of environment where students enjoy learning and do not feel rushed to grasp the material. The program is a great supplement to traditional education. Instead of attacking the problem, the instructor and teaching assistants get to the root of the problem. A hybrid model of both on-site and online learning is currently being tested.
Kumon’s Instructor, Ayana Dixon, has a B.A. from Howard University and a Master’s Degree from Liberty University. She develops lesson plans for students and administers placement tests. Having been a Kumon parent herself, she has a unique and compassionate perspective in paving a path for students so that they surprise themselves by exceeding their own goals and expectations.
