The Mint Hill Kiwanis Club is getting ready to raise funds once again for children in our local surrounding Charlotte area. This year’s event will be the eighth annual golfing fundraiser for the organization which has historically been a well attended and successful event.

The Mint Hill Kiwanis club was founded in 1999, the organization sponsors the Terrific Kids program at Bain Elementary, Clear Creek Elementary, J.H. Gunn Elementary, and Lebanon Road Elementary schools in our local area. “We are so appreciative of the support we’ve received from the community at our past golf tournaments, and we look forward to another successful tournament this year. Our club is about supporting our local children and we love supporting them any way we can,” said Club Vice President, Lisa Lane.

Blowing bubbles.

They are involved in various projects which directly impact our kids in a positive way throughout the entire school year. The club provides dictionaries for every third grade child at the Terrific kids schools mentioned above. They raise and award funds to these local schools for their classroom requirements and to improve literacy. Kiwanis will award a $1,000 scholarship to two deserving seniors at Independence High School. They support the Aktion Club of Mecklenburg, a club committed to developmentally challenged adults. Support the Kiwanis International Global Eliminate Project, which is dedicated to eradicating maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Finally, the Key Club at Independence High School, which is the oldest and biggest service program for high school students. It teaches leadership through community service by helping others in need. Support comes through the Kiwanis International family.

A nice golf swing.

The Kiwanis Golf Tournament in August is expected to generate a fair amount of money to fund the year’s busy agenda. “We’re really one of the best kept secrets around. Almost everyone recognizes the Terrific Kids stickers, but few know our group is the organization behind them. We fund everything we do each year through our golf tournament and typically surpass our goal of $8,500. It’s a fun way to get several local people together for a day for some golf, food and laughter,” said Brad Simmons, Immediate Past President.

Meanwhile, Club President Melissa Fields, said “We are hoping this year’s golf tournament will help us raise enough money to not only continue all the great work we already do like the Terrific Kids program at JH Gunn, Clear Creek, Bain and Lebanon Road, along with the Key Club at Independence and scholarship program, but also be able to consider expanding those programs or start others to reach even more children in our community.”

The tournament will be held at the Emerald Lake Golf Club 9750 Tournament Drive, Matthews, North Carolina 28104 on August 22, 2019. There are sponsorship opportunities, raffle tickets will be sold and registration will be available online or complete a brochure.
