Independence splits games with Purnell Swett Game 1

MINT HILL, NC – On Thursday the Independence Patriots’ baseball squad made the 102mile road trip to Pembroke, North Carolina to face the Rams of Purnell Swett High School in a non-conference doubleheader baseball game.

In-game one Indy’s designated hitter Brandon Moser led off with a single. Wilson Lohrer followed with a walk With runners on first and second, Taylor Moser singled to load the bases. After the second out, Indy’s first baseman PJ Chiles singled to drive in Brandon Moser and Lohrer. Catcher Jake Stanley singled to score Taylor Moser and Chiles as Indy took a 4-0lead as the top half of the first inning ended.



Carson Gesing, who picked up the win giving up 2 runs on three hits, striking out 13, and gave up no walks, took the mound for the Patriots and sat down the Rams in order in the bottom half of the inning.

Purnell Swett got on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo home run over the left-field wall making the score 4-1 with Indy leading.

The Patriots added two runs in the top of the third. Garrett Lawrencereached on a bunt. Taylor Moser got on with a base hit to left-center. Wilson Lohrer stepped in and blasted a double to score Lawrence and Taylor Moser giving Indy a 6-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams scored their second run on a home run over the right center field wall.

Wilson Lohrer put Indy up 7-2 in the top of the fifth inning. After Lohrerreached on a single, Carson Gesing and Taylor Moser drew walks to load the bases. Luke Chantry hit a sacrifice fly deep to left-center to scoreLohrer.

The Patriots increased their lead by three more runs in the top of the sixth. Tyler Spicer led off with a walk. Zack Francis reached on an error but was forced out at second while Joe Minaya was safe at first on a fielders choice. With two runners on, Wilson Lohrer drove in Spicer and Francis on a double to left field. Lohrer scored on a double by pitcher Carson Gesing, and the Patriots led 10-2 as the teams headed into the last inning.

In the top of the seventh, Luke Chantry, Garrett Lawrence, and Sam Merli each scored while Carson Gesing struck out the side in the bottom half of the seventh and the Patriots took a 13-2 non-conference win.
