CHARLOTTE – Jerry Dunlap, 61, knows his way around concrete, having been in business for over 30 years. He runs a family-owned business alongside his brother, Walter “Spanky” Dunlap, 56. Reflecting on childhood memories, Jerry found himself inspired through working under his father. “I am 61 now, and I started working with my dad when I was 12 years old” in the concrete business, says Jerry, who “learned on the job” to ease the workload on his dad.
Jerry opened Dunlap Concrete & Contractural Services Inc. with his brother after serving in the Army Reserve. They wanted to “expand and become business owners and have the chance to write [their] own check.” Although, for the brothers, there was definitely a “learning curve between working for somebody else and then working for [themselves].”
Dunlap Concrete & Contractural Services specializes in residential concrete consisting of prep and pour, replacing driveways, sidewalks, and patios. They also handle grading work, hauling gravel, decorative concrete, pouring stamp concrete, pouring concrete around pools, basements, and porches.
Jerry has a clientele of small commercial businesses as well. Dunlap Concrete & Contractural Services has expertise backed by years of experience, earning an A+ through the Better Business Bureau. They provide great military and senior citizen discounts in the surrounding Charlotte area and the areas within a 75-mile radius. The range includes but is not limited to Salisbury, Albermarle, Cornelius, Weddington, and Monroe. They offer fair prices on projects ranging from $1000 on up with a company policy that understands if a customer is not satisfied, they guarantee to come back out and resolve the problem “satisfaction guaranteed.” The turnaround time for projects can vary from the same day up to a week, depending on the service needed.
Dunlap Concrete & Contractual Services gives back to the community by supporting local churches and Toys for Tots through donations. When asked, “What is the most rewarding thing about the job?” Jerry responds almost instantly: “Customer satisfaction.” His vision for the business is the continued focus on the needs of customers, punctuality, and providing one-of-a-kind custom projects. He holds high regard for his client base relationships. “When someone invites you to their home, it is very personal,” he says, elaborating that handling clients with care is pertinent. There have been times when Jerry has checked on close clients just to see how they are doing, stating, “it is bigger than the concrete.” He is so close with his clientele that he has been invited to family functions and has given eulogies at funerals.
Jerry Dunlap is an interesting man who spends his free time watching football, traveling to the Asheville mountains, reading, and learning about history. In the next five years, he hopes to see his grandchildren take an interest in carrying out the family business with the possibility of franchising.
