Every summer, the Charlotte Mecklenburg libraries ramp up their summer programming to encourage children of all ages to read, learn and grow during the summer. Mark your calendars for these special programs you won’t want to miss at the Mint Hill Library this summer!
If you’re a fan of Mint Hill’s once-monthly Puppet Show Storytime, you’ll definitely want to catch the premiere performance of Frontline Puppeteers tomorrow, June 21, at 3:00 pm. An entirely new program, Frontline Puppeteers combines the traditional storytelling methods of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s Frontline Storytellers with puppetry and music. Mint Hill will also welcome Frontline Storyteller Kristi Madron on Wednesday, July 11 at 3:00.

On Saturday, June 23 at 3:00 pm, your STEAM-minded tweens will want to attend Thinking Feet of Ballantyne. In this beginner-friendly class, Thinking Feet, Charlotte’s premier provider of technology and coding enrichment, will introduce children in grades 6 through 9 to the amazing world of coding and computer programming. In just one hour, participants will build a fully functional mobile app that they can install on their smartphones and share with their family and friends. Another sessions of Thinking Feet will be held on Saturday, August 11:00. No prior programming experience is necessary to attend.
Just as in past summer, the library will offer its “Get Set 4 Kindergarten” program, a series of presentations for rising kindergarteners that help build pre-reading skills and prepare children for success in school in the fall. Last year’s four-part series covered topics like using the bathroom at school, navigating the cafeteria, dental health, and preparing for a full day of school. The first session of the Get Set 4 Kindergarten will be held on Tuesday, June 26 at 2:00.

On Wednesday, June 27 at 1:00, the Mint Hill Library will receive a visit from Hugo’s Book Bus! Every summer, Hugo the Hornet and his book-loving crew travel all around Charlotte visiting libraries, schools, after school programs, and summer camps encouraging children to read. Every child who attends will get to visit Hugo’s Book Bus and choose a book to take home with them. Hugo’s interactive and entertaining program for children ages 5 through 11 is one of the library’s most popular summer offerings, so make sure to sign up when registration opens on June 20.

On Wednesday, July 18 at 3:00, Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation will give children the chance to learn about and explore nature’s canopy. “Tremendous Trees” will teach children all about the trees in our area and how they help us.
On July 25 at 3:00 pm, Mint Hill will welcome “The Amazing Mr. Archer,” a balloon artists and showman. Mr. Archer’s self-proclaimed motto is, “If you can visualize it, I can balloon-atize it.” Through his own unique brand of storytelling, Mr. Archer will “balloon-atize” his own journey, sharing how reading a how-to book at his public library launched his career.
For children needing extra academic enrichment this summer, Mint Hill will offer Reading Buddies and Math Tutoring. Reading Buddies helps children ages 5 through 11 with confidence, fluency and comprehension through 30-minute, one-on-one reading sessions with library volunteers. Check the library’s web site for more information about the reading Buddies Schedule. Math Tutoring, a new program, will take place Saturdays at 11:00 am through August 11. Children ages 5 through 11 will work one-on-one with teen volunteers. Registration is required for both Reading Buddies and Math Tutoring.
All of the library’s summer programs are offered 100% free of charge. Due to space limitations, most of the special programming offered during the summer requires registration. Visit www.cmlibrary.org to register and view a full schedule of everything happening at your local library this summer!
