Mint Hill Residents,
On Friday, May 15, 2020, Roy Fielding, a member of our Planning Board passed away suddenly. Roy served on the Planning Board for the past 14 years. I had the honor of serving on the board with him for 6 years before becoming Mayor. He was always concerned about the environmental impact development and growth were having on the Town. When new areas were being planned, he asked difficult questions about density and the impact of existing residential areas.
Roy was not afraid to cast an opposing view. He represented our citizens at the highest level. Roy always made sure safety and security issues were addressed especially if water hazards were present. He made sure that developers and contractors were doing the right things for the citizens of Mint Hill. Roy had a passion for the town and a desire to preserve its beauty during its growth over the past several years.
Roy was a professor for 41 years at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. He was proud of his impact on his students. He loved their sports programs. He and Mary Gaye created a scholarship program for UNCC students. Roy will be honored with the Roy R. Fielding Aquatics Center at UNCC. The dedication will be combined with a celebration of life to honor his legacy at a later day.
Roy will be greatly missed by all of us at Town Hall. There will be big shoes to fill when finding a replacement for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary Gaye and his family.
Stay safe, stay well, stay home!
Brad Simmons
Mint Hill Mayor
