Why Are My Gums Receding?

MINT HILL, NC – When you think of a healthy and beautiful smile, you may think of straight teeth with pearly whites. However, receding gums can not only be uncomfortable but also have a negative impact on the look of your smile. It can cause sensitivity to cold temperatures and create black spaces between your teeth. There are several reasons why you may experience receding gums. Below are just a few reasons:

1. Improper Brushing Habits
 Using a hard-bristled toothbrush or brushing aggressively can be detrimental to the gums. Imagine if you were to use a hairbrush and scrub the back of your hand. Ouch! When brushing your teeth, you want to use gentle pressure with a soft toothbrush. Let us do the heavy lifting if you feel you cannot get your teeth clean.

2. Gum Disease
 When the bone shrinks away because of gum disease, the gums will follow. Losing the bone is like losing the scaffolding of a tent. The gums will start to drift away causing black spaces between your teeth. These spaces can trap food and bacteria.

3. Poor Oral Habits
 There are several habits that can cause recession such as grinding, clenching, nail-biting and ice eating. These habits can cause trauma to the delicate gums as they pull away from the teeth.
