MINT HILL, NC –Â Last week, we discussed how grinding and clenching your teeth (bruxism) will affect your dental health. There can be several long-term effects associated with this habit. This week, we will dive into how it can be managed:
- Occlusal Guard
- Also known as a nightguard or bite splint, these guards can prevent forces from being applied directly to your natural teeth. You may find some guards at a local store or online but be careful. An over-the-counter guard can be very soft. Although it is protecting your teeth, your jaw might find a way to chew on it all night. It may feel like you are chewing on gum all night!
- Getting the correct fit with a custom guard provided by your dentist is the best option for a better fit long term.
- Stress-reduction
- Stress can be a big factor when it comes to bruxism. Working towards lowering you stress by doing more meditation, yoga and relaxation techniques may help.
- Botox
- Botox can help relax the muscle that is the power behind this habit. Although it does not cure bruxism, it can help alleviate muscle pain and associated headaches for 3-4 months.
