CHARLOTTE – Regardless of how we see our lives, we’re all faced with challenges. Some more difficult than others. While going through stressful times, we think about how we can get through them as quickly as possible and move on with our lives.
The question that most people ask is, “How?”.
During times like this in my own life, I’ve found it extremely helpful to think with the end in mind. In other words, rather than putting the focus of my thoughts on the problem and the stress it’s causing, I become focused on how great I’m going to feel when this challenge is over.
For example, there’s usually have some type of laundry list of responsibilities we have to get done…including laundry…on the weekends. It may include cutting the lawn, edging/weed-whacking, shopping, cleaning the house, cooking, maybe a little painting, and of yeah, it’s the weekend, we have to have fun too.
If you’re like me, you make a list. But mine isn’t a “Things To Do” list. Mine is a “Things To Accomplish” list. “Accomplishing” something just makes me feel better than “doing” something. And as I look over the daunting tasks that lie ahead, instead of focusing on the time, effort, and energy each will take, I focus on the fact that when I’m done…and I will finish them all…I see myself sitting back, relaxing, laughing, and sipping on my beverage of choice with that incredible feeling of accomplishment.
Try it out and let me know your thoughts.
