About Oktoberfest
The tradition of Oktoberfest started with a Royal Wedding in 1810. The wedding of Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen and King Ludwig I introduced the festivities that became known as Oktoberfest. The original festivities including horse races, plenty of food and drink, and much more.
In 1811, the Royal Family decided to continue the festival and added an Agricultural Show. A carousel and two swings were added in 1818 and beer stands took the place of beer tents in 1896. Every year, the festival grew in size and amusement.
This year (2019) marks the 186th Oktoberfest event held in Munich and the original event celebrated its’ 200th anniversary in 2010. The festival has only been interrupted by Wars and the cholera epidemics. Traditionally, Oktoberfest begins on the third weekend of September and runs until the first Sunday of October.
