Since today is the first day of March, I thought it would be fun to write about a few reasons to celebrate this month!
March 1 – Beer Day (Iceland) – Are you Icelandic? Me neither but we should celebrate! Invite a few friends to join you for a local beer special.
March 2 – National Old Stuff Day – When I hear “old stuff” I think of a really old and good bottle of wine! You finally have an occasion to open your oldest bottle! You’re welcome!
March 3 – National Cold Cuts Day– This is a great way to get out of cooking dinner for the evening! Line up a make your own sandwich bar for your family and call it a party! If you want to be a little fancier, how about a nice charcuterie board with your dinner to celebrate?
March 3 – National Mulled Wine Day -Mulled Wine is a tasty after dinner drink, especially with friends, gathered around a fire pit! Check Pinterest for recipes.
March 6 – National Oreo Day – Do you know what goes well with Oreos? Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Riesling, Vino Verde, Coffee Porters & Milk Stouts!
March 9 – National Meatball Day – Plan A: Call the in-laws and invite them to a themed dinner with Italian pasta or subs. Plan B: Have a cocktail party. Make a basic meatball recipe or use frozen premade meatballs to make “meatballs three ways” with your three favorite sauces. Search online for sauce recipes such as: honey mustard, Thai peanut, sweet & sour, buffalo and of course, Italian.
March 11 – National Johnny Appleseed Day – Celebrate with all things apple! How about an apple cider from a local bar or brewery?
March 12 – Anniversary of the Girl Scouts – I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this National Holiday than by supporting your local troop and eating Girl Scout cookies! Go to http://www.girlscouts.org/en/cookies/all-about-cookies.html and search to find out where your local Girl Scouts are selling cookies. They also have a free mobile app -“Girl Scout Cookie Finder” available for download. Stay tuned to “Simply Entertaining” and the Mint Hill Times for a special column coming up detailing the best beer, wine and Girl Scout cookie pairings!
March 13 – Anniversary of the discovery of planet Pluto – Is it a planet or not? Take your family or invite a date to a planetarium to find out! Want to stay home? Invite your neighbors over for a porch party and catch a glimpse of the dwarf planet with a telescope. You will need at least an 8-inch diameter mirror. Check out www.earthsky.org for the latest astronomy information and to find out what you may be able to see in the sky on any given night. Make it a dessert party by serving Moon Pies, Milky Ways & Starbursts. Bonus points if you can pair beverages with your desserts! I’ll give you a hint for the Starbursts – ask your local wine shop for a Rosé.
March 14 – Birthday of Albert Einstein – Who wants to eat birthday cake and play trivia? I do! If that’s not your speed, check out some of Albert Einstein’s quotes on the internet. You can come up with some great party themes related to his quotes. Some of my favorites for a family night are: “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairytales.” & “Look deep into nature, you will understand everything better.” The possibilities are endless here. Have fun with it!
March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day – Do you really need my help here? Charlotte has an abundance of St. Patrick’s Day parties, parades and bar crawls.
March 20 – First day of Spring! Get outside today!
March 23 – National Puppy Day – Take your dog to a local park or restaurant with a patio. Al fresco dining is beautiful this time of year in North Carolina!
Who knew March could be so exciting? If you ever need to find an excuse to throw a party, you know who to ask! Remember to celebrate the small things- everyday!
Cheers,
Chrissy Liescheidt
