In these necessary nutrients.
Nutrient deficiency is a widespread problem amongst Americans with estimates that over 90% of us are deficient in one or more vital nutrients.
Nutrients like B-vitamins, Zinc, Vitamin D, Selenium, etc. are necessary for our bodies to perform daily and life sustaining functions every second of the day. In the absence of even just one of these nutrients, our bodies begin to lose function leading to symptoms and disease states. This article will cover 1 important nutrient that you are most likely deficient in.
Magnesium
Magnesium is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body and impacts blood pressure, metabolism, immune function and many other aspects of health. It has been estimated that over 90% of Americans are magnesium deficient and is considered by some to be the single largest health problem in the America today.
There are several reasons Americans are deficient or have insufficient levels of magnesium in their bodies. Depletion of magnesium in our soil from poor farming operations and heavy use of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals; use of fluoride and chlorine in our water supply that binds to magnesium; Americans daily use of caffeine and sugar that depletes magnesium from the body in addition to stress that burns through magnesium in our bodies attempt to balance itself.
Some telltale signs of magnesium deficiency include calcification of your arteries, muscle cramps & spasms, depression & anxiety, high blood pressure, hormone imbalances, sleep problems, low energy, weak bones and other mineral imbalances. Based upon these symptoms you can see just how important a role magnesium plays in our daily functioning.
If you believe that you may have a magnesium deficiency, your best resource is to get tested. However not all tests are reliable. Most physicians will run a simple blood (serum) test, unfortunately because most of your magnesium is stored in your cells this test may not be accurate. I recommend both a RBC magnesium test because it shows you how much magnesium is actually inside of your cells as well as a hair analysis test because it shows stores of magnesium that the body can use if the blood serum becomes deficient. Lastly, if you simply want to avoid the hassles of testing, you can just perform an at home tolerance test. Simply taking a magnesium rich supplement and seeing if your health symptom improves will let you know that you are deficient. If your symptoms do not improve, your body will simply just excrete the excess magnesium in your urine.
Magnesium rich foods include spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds, dark chocolate, yogurt, broccoli and black beans. You can also supplement with magnesium both internally and externally (in the form of mineral baths or magnesium rich oils). It has been estimated that an adult needs approximately 1,000mg/day and children 400-500 mg daily.
Over the next few weeks I will uncover the top 3 nutrient deficiencies and what you need to do to uncover and correct these before they become a serious problem for you.
