Pain is a distressing feeling which often motivates a person to avoid damaging situations, to protect a damaged body part while it heals, and to avoid similar experiences in the future. According to theInternational Association for the Study of Pain’s widely used definition states: “Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage.” In medical diagnosis, pain is regarded as a symptom of an underlying condition.
Pain is the most common reason for physician consultation in most developed countries. It is a major symptom in many medical conditions, and can interfere with a person’s quality of life and general functioning. It is estimated that nearly all people throughout their lifetime will experience pain at one time or another. In fact it is almost unavoidable despite your best efforts to care for yourself. One type of pain that effects many people are conditions known as tendinitis and tendinosis.
Tendons are collagenous, fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone. Tendonitis or tendinosis are conditions in which these tough, fibrous cords begin to degenerate and break down leading to small tears or disorganized collagen fibers which eventually lead to pain. Some of the most common conditions associated with tendon pain are shoulder pain, elbow pain, knee pain, hip pain and heel (foot) pain.
It is well understood that most pain resolves once the noxious stimulus has been removed and the body has healed, however pain may persist despite removal of the stimulus and apparent healing of the body. This is because sometimes pain arises in the absence of any detectable stimulus, damage or disease.
One of the greatest challenges to healing tendon pain is the fact that tendons and ligaments have a very poor blood supply which limits rapid healing of these tissues. In fact, tendinitis can take approximately 6 weeks to heal whereas tendinosis can take as long as 3-6 months to heal.
At Stanly Wellness Center, we are able to speed the recovery and healing of these tissue much faster than expected because we use therapies that have been scientifically proven and FDA cleared to speed the healing process. Low Level Laser therapy and Bemer therapy are just two of the modalities that we implement into a patients care program. Both of these therapies work to improve blood flow and speed up mitochondrial synthesis and cellular regeneration to get the patient to heal much faster than expected.
