Enjoy the life that you were designed for

Have you made the commitment to improving your health this year? Perhaps you decided it was finally time to lose that extra 10-20lbs. Hopefully you have come to the conclusion that living a life on daily medication with numerous side effects is in fact no life at all. I always make it clear to patients that God never designed your body to run on medications. You don’t have high blood pressure because your body finally ran out of blood pressure medication, and you don’t have heartburn because of a lack of Tums in your system. While medications can be very useful and helpful for acute, short-term situations, you need to restore proper balance back to your body and get to the root cause of your health problems so that you can live and enjoy the life that you were designed for.

That being said, one area that many people go wrong with regards to their health is their diet. More specifically what they drink. All too often you see people begin to improve their meals by eating less junk food and processed food for more in-season, straight from the farm, loaded with vitamins, mineral and anti-oxidants food, however they still drink that sweet tea, sugar loaded coffee, alcoholic beverage, soda or sports drink. These items can quickly sabotage your weight loss efforts because of their negative effects on your liver, kidneys, pancreas and other vital organs. Listed below are the worst beverage options that need to be avoided followed by healthy options that will help to keep you on track with your health recovery program.

WATER – you need to drink one thing and one thing only to be healthy: PLAIN WATER. Recently a research article came out that showed that many popular brands of bottled water contain actual pieces of plastic floating in the water, meaning that with every sip, you are also consuming plastic. Obviously this is not good for you. When it comes to water sources, triple filtered, reverse osmosis, alkaline water served in a glass container is best. Spring water straight from the source (Cold Springs Church near Concord has a free spring tap) followed by well water is second best. However, if these sources of water are located near farms or industrial plants that spray toxic chemicals on the land, these can leach into the water supply. Faucet water is near the bottom of my list.

SUGAR SWEETENED BEVERAGES – these beverages are the number 1 problem. Items like soda & fruit juices like commercial apple and orange juice have been shown to be major contributors to obesity and other related health conditions. If you must have a soda or juice look for naturally sweetened sodas like Zevia, Bai or Coconut water and water down your juices 1/2 to 3/4 water to 1/2 to 1/4 juice.
