CHARLOTTE – Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted that winter is here for a bit longer, but there’s no reason we can’t look forward to spring! Speaking of spring — did you know that dogs can suffer from seasonal allergies just like humans? That’s right — environmental allergens can affect your furry family members, too!

Seasonal allergies are brought on by factors only present during specific times of the year. Think tree and grass pollen, dust/dust mites, mold/mold mites, flea bites, and fresh grass. While humans will typically experience sneezing plus a runny nose and eyes due to seasonal allergies, dogs more often have itching and red skin — though they can have symptoms similar to humans as well. Sometimes, recurring ear infections can also indicate a seasonal allergy.

Dogs can experience a range of itchiness from allergies, and you’ll most likely notice it in their armpit, groin, muzzle, or paw regions. If you notice your dog scratching, rubbing on carpet or furniture, chewing or licking themselves more than normal, it’s worth a visit to your vet! If they continue such behavior, it can lead to raw patches, which can then potentially lead to painful infections requiring additional treatment.
