How to make Slime

CHARLOTTE, NC – Last week, my children decided that they wanted to make slime. My first thought was to say no because I didn’t want to deal with the mess, but, instead, I said yes and let them give it a try. Best decision ever! They had a fantastic time making slime and playing with it for hours. They had contests to see whose slime would stretch the farthest. They hid small figures in the slime. They squeezed the slime and made noises. They made up slime games. They mixed different colors of slime to make new colors. I had no idea that slime would be so entertaining! It was definitely worth the mess.

Before we made our slime, we looked up a few recipes online and decided on a super simple, four-ingredient version using supplies that we already had on hand. It made a nice stretchy slime that wasn’t too sticky. As they played, whenever the slime stopped stretching well, the kids added a little bit of baby lotion to their hands to help make the slime supple again.

Easy Slime Recipe

Ingredients:

1 (4oz.) bottle of school glue

Food coloring

½ tsp. baking soda

1 T. contact solution

Directions:

  1. Empty the entire bottle of glue into a mixing bowl.
  2. Add 1 or 2 drops of food coloring and mix.
  3. Stir in baking soda.
  4. Add contact solution. As you stir, the mixture will become harder and should begin to form a ball.
  5. Once a ball forms, begin to knead by hand until the slime is smooth. If the slime is too sticky, add more contact solution as needed.
  6. Play with your slime!
  7. Store in a plastic baggie or other airtight containers when you’re finished playing.
