Apple picking

Apple picking is one of my family’s favorite fall activities. Every September, we spend a day at Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock, NC. It’s so much fun to walk through the orchard with its beautiful mountain views as we fill our basket to overflowing with apples.

Apples from the grocery store just can’t compare with those picked straight from the tree. Every time we visit the apple orchard, we always come home with 20 pounds of apples or more!

What do we do with all the apples we pick? We mostly just slice them and eat them raw, but we use them in lots of yummy desserts and meals as well.

Here are a few things that we have made with our apple bounty:

Desserts

  • Apple turnovers
  • Apple pie
  • Apple cobbler
  • Apple crisp
  • Caramel apples

Breakfast

  • Apple cinnamon muffins
  • Apple pancakes
  • Apple cinnamon oatmeal
  • Apple stuffed French toast

Lunch

  • Apple and cheese quesadilla
  • Chicken salad with apples and raisins
  • Peanut butter and apple sandwich

Snacks

  • Applesauce
  • Peanut butter apple slices topped with raisins

Dinner

  • Apple walnut salad
  • Pork chops with apples
  • Baked apples

August through October is apple season in the Carolinas. There are many pick-your-own apple orchards to choose from within a few hours drive so pack up the kids for a day trip and have fun!
