Happy Valentine’s Day!

Everyone celebrates Valentine’s Day differently. Some couples go over the top with gifts and fancy dinners out. Others ignore the day entirely. My family and I fall somewhere in between. We enjoy celebrating as a family, giving and receiving small gifts like chocolates or flowers, making homemade cards for one another and eating heart shaped, pink and red foods. It’s fun to make one another feel special and loved.

Valentine’s Day is great, but shouldn’t be the only day we make those we love feel extra special. Amidst the busyness of everyday life, it’s important to intentionally show our children how very much we love them.

Here are 12 little ways to show love to your kids every day.

  1. Put a note in in your child’s lunchbox that says, “Enjoy your day! I love you!”
  2. Surprise your child by coming to eat lunch with them at school.
  3. Ask about your child’s day. Listen and make eye contact while they tell you about it.
  4. Put your phone away and give your child your full attention when you spend time together.
  5. Give hugs and kisses before your child leaves for school and again when they come home.
  6. Play with your child for at least a few minutes every day.
  7. Compliment your child.
  8. Make bedtime special. Spend a few extra minutes reading, singing and/or talking with your child. Give hugs and kisses. Never go to bed angry with one another.
  9. Display your child’s artwork proudly around the house.
  10. Attend your child’s sports events, school programs, music recitals, etc. as often as you can. Cheer for them, encourage them and let them know you are proud of them.
  11. Hold your child’s hand or put your arm around their shoulders.
  12. Say “I love you!” every day.
