Veterinary specialists are veterinarians who have received several years of training in a particular field beyond veterinary school. They must also pass a rigorous exam. There are currently 40 different veterinary specialties. Only doctors who have completed the training and examinations in their field of specialty are referred to as specialists; other veterinarians may have a special interest in and do additional study in these areas, but by law they may not advertise themselves as a specialist.
At one time, if your pet needed to be seen by a specialist the only option was to travel to the nearest veterinary college. We are very fortunate to have a variety of specialists in Matthews and Charlotte, including ophthalmologists, neurologists, surgeons, and dermatologists.
