You’re a grand old flag,
You’re a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You’re the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
“You’re a Grand Old Flag” – George Cohan
For something that physically is as simple as a piece of fabric with a certain pattern and colors on it, it seems inconceivable the amount of conflict a flag can cause. It is when you look behind the physical, however, that you realize the emotion, the meaning, and the significance of that piece of fabric.
When a veteran is honored after their death with final military honors, the flag is an integral piece of that service. If you watch the honor guard fold the flag, you will see that they fold it 13 times to arrive at the triangular shape that is ultimately presented to the family. Those 13 folds, like our flag, are merely physical elements that represent so much more. While not having an official script, those 13 folds represent everything from honor to family to faith.
Lowe-Neddo Funeral Home recently introduced our exclusive “13 Folds” program designed specifically for veterans and their families. Like those folds and the flag, this program physically appears to be simple but when combined with the honor and significance of all it provides, becomes so much more. If you or someone you love is a veteran, please let us know. For no cost or obligation, I and my staff can ensure benefits earned are available before it is too late. And if you want to know what each of the 13 folds stands for, we can help you with that too.
Until next week, take time to live, laugh and love!
