Topsoil Good – Garden Soil Better

CHARLOTTE – It is important to differentiate between plain topsoil and garden soil for most applications. Many factors should be considered when you choose your soil and soil provider since different attributes will be beneficial depending on what the soil is used for.

Topsoil is composed of clay, silt, sand, and other organic matter that is removed from the top 12” of earth during land clearing and construction projects. It can be used for direct planting if it is of suitable quality. The actual composition of topsoil usually depends on local soil since topsoil is not typically shipped very far due to freight costs. North Carolina soil can run from sandy “down east”, to clay-based in the Piedmont, to rocky in the west.

Garden Soil is topsoil enriched with compost and organic matter to make it better suited for actual plant growth. The addition of compost will reduce compaction and also provide nutrients that will feed the plants over many years. While this soil is more expensive initially, it often-times pays for itself due to improved plant health, reduced fertilizer cost, and better long-term results.

The Charlotte region is blessed with numerous top-notch soil suppliers that carry a variety of soils for your every need.
