CHARLOTTE – With Spring just around the corner, below are some suggestions to prepare for those long-awaited warm temperatures.
Inspect your trees and shrubs
Look for any branches that might be broken or damaged and prune them.
Test your soil
Test your soil every few years to make sure it has the proper pH balance and mix of nutrients.
Fertilize your lawn
Determine your soil nutrient needs through your soil testing. Fertilize at the best time of year. Different types of grass require fertilizing at different times of year.
Fertilize trees and shrubs too
A slow-release fertilizer product is advised just before mulch application.
Control Weeds
Late February early March is a great time to apply pre-emergent weed control for weeds such as crabgrass.
Make planting beds neat and tidy
Rake old leaves and debris from plant beds.
Add an inch thick layer of mulch
For plant beds and around trees, but never let the mulch touch tree trunks or accumulate to more than 3 inches. In addition to making planting areas looking neat, mulch also retains moisture and protects root systems during summer and winter. Natural mulch also decomposes and adds organic matter to the soil.
Inspect your irrigation system
Once the weather warms up, turn on your irrigation system and inspect it to see if it is in working condition. If you hire a landscape or irrigation company they can provide any needed maintenance and repairs.
