In most cases, you need to know your square footage. To measure you can use a wheel measurement tool or measuring tape but the simplest way is simply walking off the area. Length X Width = Square Feet. Measurements taken prior to shopping for materials will speed up the process.
BUYING BY THE “SCOOP” VERSUS CUBIC YARD OR TON
Understand that if you buy a “scoop” of material you need to know what a scoop means. Not all scoops are created equal. In some cases, suppliers may use 1/2 cubic yard buckets while other suppliers are using 1 or 2 cubic yard buckets. Ask for cost per cubic yard or ton. Most bulk materials are sold by the cubic yard or by the ton.
WHERE DID THE MULCH COME FROM?
Ask if the mulch came from lumberyards. Mulch supplied from lumber yards is the purest material. If you come across “economical” mulch it probably comes from residential yard waste and construction clearing of whatever’s on site. Excessive weed growth, possible contamination, and appearance could be issued.
MULCH AND STONE COVERAGE
On average one cubic yard of mulch will cover approximately 100 square feet at a standard 3-inch depth. Coverage of a cubic yard or ton of stone or soil will be less. Many calculators on websites are for mulch only.
SWITCHING FROM MULCH TO DECORATIVE STONE?
Consult with your local nursery regarding plants that do well with stone vs mulch. The idea of never having to freshen up mulch does sound tempting. But stone retains heat especially in the Summer and can harm some plants.
