CHARLOTTE – Brick chips are a popular landscaping alternative to mulch that folks continue to request more and more. When shopping for brick chips make sure you know the difference between brick chips mixed with demolition material (primarily mortar) and pure brick chips generated from the actual brick manufacturing process. The demolition brick chips will have Grey/White mortar intermingled with the brick chips and brick chips from the manufacturing process will usually be a solid color, usually red. Both can be attractive in the right setting and the demolition brick chips can be less expensive. Check with your local nursery to determine what plants will thrive with brick chips. As stated in an earlier column, care should be taken due to the heat that is radiated from bricks chips just like stone.
