Should You List Your Home For Sale Before the End of the Year or Wait Until Next Year

Many potential sellers are pondering this question right now. Should you list your home for sale now or should you wait until next year? Of course, the answer depends on your situation and not all sellers have the flexibility to wait to list their home for sale.

There are reasons to wait and there are reasons to get your home listed and sold now. Let’s look at both.

Reasons to Wait Until Next Year

The biggest reason you should wait until next year to sell your home is you’re not ready to sell. Maybe your home needs a little bit of work or you simply won’t have the time throughout the holiday season to get it ready to sell. If this is the case, you should wait until next year when you can get your home ready to be listed the right way.

There really isn’t another good reason to wait to list your home for sale.

Reasons to List Now and Sell Now

Did you know, existing home sales have increased from November to December about 4.5% over the past three years, according to the National Association of Realtors?

Buyers are still out there and they are ready to buy, often with more vigor than during the summer selling season. There are several good reasons to sell during the holiday season including:

  • The Internet Doesn’t Have a Season – Buyers will still be online searching for homes, no matter the time of the year.
  • Less Competition – Many other potential sellers will decide to wait to list their home, which means, less competing homes for sale.
  • Buyers Get Time Off – It’s actually easier to book showings during the holiday season because many potential buyers get time off for the holidays.
  • Some buyers want to be in their new home before the holidays.

There are many good reasons to sell your home during the holidays and you certainly don’t have to wait until next year to list your home for sale. In addition, if you’re looking to buy a home, the holiday season can be a great time to buy. That’s another good reason to sell if you’re planning to buy something else once your home has been sold.

If you’re considering listing your home for sale this year instead of waiting, make sure you hire a good real estate agent. Someone with experience selling during the holidays will make a big difference. They will know how to make your home feel cozy during the winter and use this as a selling point.
