Moving? 10 Things to do Before you Pack

If you just bought a new home, it’s time to get prepared to move. You don’t want to be bogged down with the process of moving. Relieve some of that moving day stress by doing these ten things before you pack.

#1 – Downsize/Minimalize

Maybe you know you’ll be buying new furniture for the new home. If so, donate or sell your current furniture. You can also minimalize in other areas to make packing a breeze. Donate items you don’t need or want and sell items worth selling.

#2 – Create an Inventory

Before packing, create a list of everything you own organized by each room. This makes it easier to make sure everything gets packed and makes the trip with you.

#3 – Plan Your Move

Moving starts much sooner than moving day. Plan things out to ensure you have everything packed and all chores have been done before moving day.

#4 – Create Your Moving Budget

You’ll need a truck, boxes, packing supplies and more. Make sure you have a budget for your move, even if you plan to hire professionals.

#5 – Hire a Moving Company

If you plan to hire someone to help with moving, make sure you book them in advance.

#6 – Change your Address

You don’t need to wait until you’re settled in your new home to change your address. Do this a few weeks before you move to ensure your mail has been forwarded before you arrive.

#7 – Cancel/Switch Utilities

Make sure you get your utilities, cable, internet, etc. moved to your new address or cancelled before you move.

#8 – Pack a First Night Bag

Many people forget the things they will need on the first night in their new place. They just pack and end up searching through boxes for essential items. Packing a first night bag will allow you everything you need for that first night without digging through multiple boxes.

#9 – Plan the Actual Trip

If you’re moving from another city or state, make sure you take the time to plan your route. Figure out how many times you will need to stop to get a more accurate ETA and consider planning where you might stop, especially if you’re driving the moving truck.

#10 – Don’t Forget the Pets

You want to make sure you take care of your pets during the move. They need attention, too, or they could get rather stressed.

If you follow these ten tips, you’ll have a smoother move and packing will be much easier. Make sure you plan everything in advance and stay as organized as possible. Moving can quickly become overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to become stressful.
