How to Prepare Your Home for Winter Weather

The winter is here and while it may not be so harsh in the Mint Hill area, you should still prepare your home for the change in weather. The cold, the ice, and the snow can all be harsh on a home, even if it’s not as cold as it may be in the northern states. Here are a few of the best ways to prepare your home for the winter weather.

Use Weather Stripping

The doors, windows, vents, and other areas of your home with gaps can be properly sealed with weather stripping. Not only will weather stripping help in the winter, but also in the summer. It will help keep the warm air in during the winter and the cold air out. During the summer, it will work the same by keeping the cold air in and the warm air out.

Gutter Cleaning

If Mint Hill does experience any freezing rain, ice, or snow, having clean gutters will go a long way to protecting your home. If your gutters aren’t clean, you could end up with a horrible issue. A blockage may cause melting snow or ice to seep into your roof or even flood your home. This is also important just during a regular rain storm.

Protect your Pipes

One of the most common issues those around Charlotte deal with during cold weather is a burst pipe. All it takes is temperatures below freezing or close to freezing and you could be shelling out thousands to fix the damage from a burst pipe.

You can protect your pipes by leaving the heat at a reasonable level when you leave the house and keeping a faucet dripping during serious cold snaps. You can also make sure your pipes are properly insulated to ensure they are protected from the cold.

Have your HVAC System Inspected

You will likely need the heat during the winter in Mint Hill. While it may not be super cold all the time, there will be days where the heat is vital to your comfort and survival. Your home will need the heat, as well.

Make sure you have your HVAC system and/or furnace inspected before it gets too cold. Of course, it’s never too late to have it inspected. The last things you want is your heating system going out in the middle of a cold snap.

Use these tips to prepare your home for winter weather. With the right preparation, you won’t have anything to worry about this year.
