Thursday, October 19

Mint Hill Library children’s activities for today are as follows:



Family Story Time will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Reading Buddies for children ages five through 12 will be available at 4 and 4:30 p.m. Children will read one-on-one with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Children between the ages of 5 and 11 can come by the library at 6 p.m. to receive free homework help from a library volunteer.

Friday, October 20

Matthews Playhouse will present the play, Junie B. Jones is Not a Crook, October 13-22. Show dates and times are: Friday October 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday October 21 and Sunday October 22 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $13 for adults and $11 for students and seniors. The Charlotte Hornets home opener will be held at 7 p.m. at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte. The Hornets will take on the Atlanta Hawks. All attendees will receive a Buzz City Alive graphic t-shirt in celebration of opening night.

Saturday, October 21

Mint Hill Library children’s activities for today are as follows:

Family Story Time will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Children can strengthen reading skills by reading aloud to a therapy dog during the Paws to Read program at 10:30 a.m.

The Teen Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. to discuss The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Registration is required.

Children can learn chess basics during the Learn, Play, Connect program at 3 p.m.

Reading Buddies for children ages five through 12 will be available at 3 and 3:30 p.m. Children will read one-on-one with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Monday, October 23

Mint Hill Library children’s activities for today are as follows:

Families with babies and toddlers can visit the library at 9:30 a.m. for Family Story Time: 0-2. The program will include stories, songs and movement.

Reading Buddies for children ages five through 12 will be available at 6 and 6:30 p.m. Children will read one-on-one with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Tuesday, October 24

Mint Hill Library children’s activities for today are as follows:

Baby Story Time for babies birth through 17 months will be held at 10:15 a.m.

Tiny Tots Story Time for toddlers ages 18 to 23 months will be held at 11:15 a.m.

Reading Buddies for children ages five through 12 will be available at 6 and 6:30 p.m. Children will read one-on-one with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Wednesday, October 25

Mint Hill Library children’s activities for today are as follows:

Two Time Story Time for toddlers age 24 to 36 months will be held at 10:15 a.m.

Preschool Story Time for children age three to five will be held at 11:15 a.m.

Reading Buddies for children ages five through 12 will be available at 4 and 4:30 p.m. Children will read one-on-one with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes. Registration is required.

The Rookie Science program will be held at 4 p.m. Kids ages five to 11 are invited to explore science through books, hands-on educational activities, and experiments. Registration is required.

Thursday, October 26

Mint Hill Library children’s activities for today are as follows:

Family Story Time will be held at 11:15 a.m.

Reading Buddies for children ages five through 12 will be available at 4 and 4:30 p.m. Children will read one-on-one with a teen volunteer for 30 minutes. Registration is required.

Children between the ages of 5 and 11 can come by the library at 6 p.m. to receive free homework help from a library volunteer.

Bring the kids in their pjs for Pajama Story Time at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, October 28

The Charlotte Kids Fest will be held on the campus of UNC Charlotte (9100 Robert D. Snyder Road, Charlotte) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will feature building and learning activities, performing arts, book readings and science demos, super hero meet and greet, music and food vendors. The Town of Matthews will host the “Not So Spooky” Halloween Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Stumptown Park. The event is free and is for families with children ages 10 and under. The carnival will feature games, candy, crafts, hay rides, face painting, a bounce house, food vendors, music and a costume parade.

The Charlotte Checkers will take on Utica at 6 p.m. at the Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte. The Checkers will offer a Family Night discount of $45 (40 percent) on groups of four tickets purchased online. Visit gocheckers.com for a schedule, promotions and ticket information.

The Charlotte Checkers will take on Utica at 1 p.m. at the Bojangles’ Coliseum in Charlotte. Stick around after the game for a post-game skate with the players. The cost to skate is $8 for those who bring their own skates and $10 for those who rent skates. Proceeds benefit the Checkers Charitable Foundation.
