Bring a lawn chair or blanket to Stumptown Park in downtown Matthews for “Food Truck Friday.” The event is held on second and fourth Fridays, April through September, from 5-9 pm. Earth Day on the Greenway with Kids in Nature Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Four Mile Creek Greenway behind Matthews Community Center. The event is presented by Habitat and Wildlife Keepers (HAWK). Activities include eco-friendly exhibits and vendors, rain barrels from Coca Cola, HAWK-cycling (egg cartons, corks, pull tabs, etc.), E-cycling by Goodwill Industries, document shredding (10 a.m. to 12 p.m.), free NWF tree seedlings, hikes, scavenger hunts, kids crafts, fairy houses, and music. Reed Gold Mine in Midland will host a Carolina Gold Rush Event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 1850s mining era will be highlighted through living history demonstrations of surface and underground mining, hands-on mining activities and general demonstrations. The cost of the event is $5 for adults and $4 for children ages 3-12. Panning for gold is an additional charge of $3.21 per pan.
