Local High School Sports.

Independence Patriots 

Football: 

Shai Wheeler – The senior all-purpose player accumulated 208 yards of offense against Myers Park recently. He had 162 yards rushing, two touchdowns, a pass reception for 30 yards, and passed for 16 yards offensively.

Davion Nelson – The junior running back had 112 yards rushing on 22 carries averaging 5.1 yards per carry and one rushing touchdown for 6 yards. He also completed a 30 yard pass from his halfback position.

Honorable Mention: The Patriots defensive play from Tyson Clawson, Sirr Robison, Ethan Safriet, Omar Zazueta and Jeremy Philips against an explosive Mustangs offense.

Soccer: 



David Martinez – Scored the initial goal of the game in the first half against Ragsdale.

Jonny Mwembya – Scored the winning goal of the game against Ragsdale in the first round of the state soccer playoffs. He also was awarded an assist in the initial goal.

Ro Bik Lian – The junior had two assists in the game make a significant contribution to the 2-1 victory.

Queen’s Grant Stallions

Basketball: 

Jeremiah Murphy – The All-Conference senior had a huge game for the Stallions scoring 27 points, grabbing 11 rebounds for the double-double. He also added 4 steals in the during the contest in the 60-49 victory over Sugar Creek on Friday night.

LB Boyette – Another solid All-Conference senior made a significant contribution to the Stallions big win by scoring 16 points, hauling down 5 rebounds and making 2 steals in the contest.

Girls Basketball:

Sydney Reynolds – The freshman and leading Stallions scorer netted 10 points and had one steal against Sugar Creek.

Jazlyn Jordan – The junior contributed 9 points and 3 rebounds coming off the bench providing excellent and productive minutes for the Lady Stallions.

Soccer: 

Micah Parker – The senior scored 2 goals against Swain County in the first round of the playoffs. He scored a goal against Hayesville on Saturday in the second round win. Parker also leads the team with 27 goals, 3 assists and 57 points on the season.

Carlos Resillas – The junior has been pushing the ball downfield and helping set up plays in the first two rounds of the playoffs. He also has scored 10 goals and has provided 18 assists for 38 points on the season.

Cristian Rosado – The junior provided a big assist against Swain County and another assist in the Hayesville victory. He has scored 11 goals along with 5 assists for a total of 27 points on the season.

2019 Men’s 1A Soccer Championships

The Stallions have been on a roll in the state soccer tournament defeating the # 10 seed Swain County 2-1 and # 7 Hayesville 2-0. They will take on the # 2 seed Mount Airy on Wednesday, November 13th away in the third round of the playoffs. Wonder if the Stallions #23 seed will be able to pull off another upset?

Honorable Mention: 

Anthony Armas a freshmen has contributed an assist and scored a goal in two playoff games giving the Stallions an added boost. Also, goalkeeper Amado Rodriquez has allowed one goal in two games and had a clean sheet against Hayesville. The Stallions defense has been playing their best soccer of the season during the playoffs.
